What are Mini Dental Implants?

Full-size dental implants require a sturdy bone with sufficient density to support it. Professionals will use either the jawbone (maxilla or mandible) or zygomatic bone (cheekbone) to anchor the implant. However, in cases where a patient has limited bone volume due to degradation or conditions like osteoporosis, a mini dental implant may be indicated.

These implants have a smaller diameter and shorter length than normal implants, though they are made from the same biocompatible, sturdy materials. They accomplish the same goal of supporting dental prostheses such as implants and they can be placed through less invasive surgical techniques due to their small size.

Though they fulfill the same purpose as full-sized implants, they are not as durable or strong and may need to be eventually replaced. Only those in the special circumstances mentioned above should consider mini implants as a viable substitute for traditional ones.
